Strandbad Wannsee - Berliner Bäder

This guide to Strandbad Wannsee in Berlin follows Hermann Clajus, who ran Europe's largest open-air lido until Nazi officials pushed him out in 1933, and the segregation that followed as signs barred Jewish Berliners from the beach by 1935. Those signs briefly vanished during the 1936 Olympics, so foreign visitors would not see them, before quietly returning once the games ended. The beach still runs for over a kilometer, its sand shipped in from the Baltic coast because Wannsee's own shore was too muddy for bathers.
