Saint Mary's Church

This guide to Saint Mary's Church in Berlin uncovers the Dance of Death, a twenty-two-meter mural painted during the plague years of the 1480s, showing a skeletal figure named Death leading a pope, a cardinal, an emperor, a merchant and a jester one by one into a slow procession. In 1614 the image was judged too grim, or simply out of fashion, and someone painted over it entirely. Even Christ himself appears among the figures, watching the procession pass.
