Prague's golden age arrived in the fourteenth century under Emperor Charles IV, who made the city his imperial capital and gave it much of what you come to see: Charles University (founded 1347, the oldest in Central Europe), the New Town, and the stone bridge that bears his name — its foundation stone laid in 1357 and its spans lined today with baroque saints. Six centuries later the story came full circle on Wenceslas Square, where the 1989 Velvet Revolution peacefully ended communist rule; the flower-covered Lennon Wall in the Lesser Town still carries that spirit of quiet defiance.

Cross Charles Bridge at dawn, when the statues emerge from the river mist — rub the plaque of St. John of Nepomuk for luck, as generations have before you. Climb to Prague Castle, one of the largest ancient castle complexes in the world, where the towers of St. Vitus Cathedral crown the skyline. In Old Town Square, join the crowd beneath the Astronomical Clock — installed in 1410 and still the oldest one operating anywhere — as its hourly parade of apostles begins. Then trade the crowds for the quiet ramparts of Vyšehrad, Prague's other castle hill, or seek out the Dancing House, the city's playful modern counterpoint.
