Břevnov Monastery
Markétská 1/28, 169 00 Praha 6-Břevnov
Baroque Benedictine abbey with an ancient crypt, founded beside a legendary spring over a thousand years ago.
This guide to Brevnov Monastery in Prague opens in April 1950, when secret police seized the abbey and put its abbot, Anastaz Opasek, on trial as a traitor and spy while the monks scattered abroad. It reaches back to the monastery's founding legend beside a spring in 993, and forward to the Baroque rebuilding raised from 1708 by Krystof Dientzenhofer and finished by his son. Beneath the basilica, archaeologists in the 1960s uncovered a crypt dating to around 1040, buried under everything that came after.
