This guide to the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen opens in 1959, when two painters were commissioned to fill the main wall of Beijing's Great Hall of the People with a vision of the entire Chinese landscape, inspired by a poem of Mao Zedong's. It follows one of them, Guan Shanyue, from his 1912 birth in Guangdong through training under Gao Jianfu in the Lingnan school that fused ink painting with Western technique, and his work alongside Fu Baoshi on that Beijing commission. He kept painting for four more decades afterward, landscapes and, above all, plum blossoms, a flower that in Chinese culture blooms before the winter cold has passed.
