Tou-Se-We Museum

This guide to the Tou-Se-We Museum in Shanghai follows Zhang Chongren, an orphan raised in the Jesuit workshops here and trained in painting, carving and glasswork, from these gates to Brussels as a young sculptor. It traces the orphanage's founding by French missionaries in 1864 and the trades it taught hundreds of homeless boys here, alongside painted glass and carved screens that once traveled to world fairs in Paris, San Francisco and Chicago. A 1934 introduction in Brussels connected Zhang to a struggling young cartoonist working on his next book.
