Jiading Confucius Temple （South Gate）

This guide to the Jiading Confucius Temple follows magistrate Gao Yansun's gamble in 1219: founding a temple in a brand-new, obscure Shanghai county and betting it could become a center of scholarship. It traces eight hundred years and more than seventy rounds of rebuilding that followed, along with the imperial examination system the temple existed to serve.
