Guyi Garden

This guide to Guyi Garden in Shanghai starts with a small pavilion that looks unfinished, missing one of its four corners, and traces why local carpenters left it that way sometime in the 1930s. From there it goes back to the 1520s, when a Ming dynasty magistrate named Min Shiji hired the bamboo carver Zhu Sansong to lay out the grounds, and follows the garden through later owners who renamed and expanded it, including a merchant named Ye Jin in 1746.
