This guide to Columbia Circle in Shanghai follows architect Elliott Hazzard, who built this Spanish-style country club for Shanghai's American expatriates in 1924, complete with an outdoor pool, tennis courts, and a bowling alley where an orchestra played American dance tunes. After Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces seized the compound and turned it into an internment camp for Allied civilians, with Hazzard himself marched in as a prisoner of the building he had designed. Look for the original 1920s mosaic tiles still lining the pool beside you.
