Shili Hualang Yulong River S Gate

This guide to the south gate of the Ten Mile Gallery follows a 1998 detour by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who left his motorcade to pedal a bicycle through the rice paddies and karst peaks along this stretch of road toward Yangshuo. It traces the road that still carries his name, the thousand-year-old banyan tree tied to a beloved Chinese folk film, and the bamboo rafts drifting the Yulong River below. Best taken slowly, by bike or on foot, the way Carter did.
