This guide to Impression Sanjie Liu in Guilin turns the Li River itself into a stage, roped off after dark against twelve limestone peaks, and traces the disputed legend of Liu Sanjie, a farmer's daughter whose voice no rival singer could beat, and the landlord who wanted her silenced. It follows director Zhang Yimou, who later staged the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, spending five years building this show with more than six hundred local farmers and fishermen instead of trained dancers.
