Diecai Shan

This guide to Diecai Shan in Guilin turns on the winter of 1650, when the Ming official Qu Shisi held this city against the invading Qing army, once borrowing three hundred Portuguese soldiers and cannon from Macau, until the food and the soldiers ran out and the Qing general walked in. Rather than flee like every other official, Qu Shisi stayed, and was held in a cave on this hill with one loyal friend, spending what time they had left composing poetry together. Feel the cold air still breathing out of the cave mouth, the same chill that gave this hill its old name.
