Guangzhou Museum of Art

This guide to the Guangzhou Museum of Art follows Guan Zepei, a broke primary-school teacher taken in around 1935 by the painter Gao Jianfu, who trained him for free at his Chunshui Studio and gave him a new name built from three characters meaning porch, mountain and moon. It shows how the gallery devoted to him was designed around those very syllables, and leads you through decades of his ink work, from sketches of the 1940s onward, that he later gave to the museum himself. A few rooms away sits Gao Jianfu's own memorial hall, filled with sketches and letters from his family and students.
