Viña Santa Rita

This guide to Viña Santa Rita outside Santiago opens in 1814, when Bernardo O'Higgins and a hundred and twenty of his men, fleeing north after the Battle of Rancagua went badly against them, spent a desperate night hidden in this cellar while Spanish patrols searched for them. It moves on to Domingo Fernández Concha, who formally founded the winery here in 1880 and grew the estate into a small town with its own chapel and school. Walk the park behind the old buildings and you'll find Andean foxes, great horned owls, and the largest bougainvillea in South America.
