Vancouver Aquarium

This guide to the Vancouver Aquarium tells the story of Sam Burich, sent to Saturna Island in 1964 with a harpoon gun to kill a young orca whose body was meant for a sculpture outside this building. It follows the botched hunt, the podmates that gathered to hold the wounded animal up so it could breathe, and the aquarium director's decision to try keeping it alive in a pen at Jericho Beach, nicknamed Moby Doll. A scientist who flew in to see the whale said it simply did not look threatening.
