Roedde House Museum

This guide to the Roedde House Museum in Vancouver follows bookbinder Gustav Roedde, who left Germany, married in Cleveland, and settled in a booming Vancouver in 1888, two years after the city's great fire. Before this turreted 1893 house rose on Barclay Street, reportedly designed by architect Francis Rattenbury, the family had already lost a young daughter, Anna Henrietta, after she ate poisonous berries. Look up at the veranda and turret Gustav built for the seven children and three St Bernard dogs who filled the house afterward.
