Kensington Market

This guide to Kensington Market in Toronto starts with the 1890 demolition of Belle Vue, cavalry officer George Taylor Denison's estate, and follows the Eastern European Jewish immigrants who built their own economy of stalls here after being shut out of shops open on their Saturday Sabbath. By the 1920s the neighborhood held as many as sixty thousand Jewish residents and more than thirty synagogues, including the Kiever Synagogue that Ukrainian Jewish immigrants built in 1927 at Denison Square and Bellevue Avenue.
