Fort York National Historic Site

This guide to Fort York in Toronto centers on the morning of April 27, 1813, when roughly 2,600 American troops landed west of the fort and its badly outnumbered defenders, about 750 British regulars, Canadian militia and Ojibwa warriors, prepared to fall back. As the Americans pushed toward the walls, commander Sir Roger Sheaffe faced a brutal choice over the fort's gunpowder magazine. Seven of the eight original buildings still standing date from the rebuilding that followed.
