This guide to the Distillery District in Toronto opens in 1834, when a windmill miller named James Worts walked into his own well and drowned, two weeks after his wife died in childbirth, leaving his brother-in-law William Gooderham alone with the mill they had built together. Rather than sell up, Gooderham turned the leftover grain mash into whiskey, and that afterthought grew into one of the largest distilleries in the British Empire. Prohibition later turned its export trade notorious.
