Sanctuaire Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

This guide to the Sanctuaire Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, outside Quebec City, opens with the crutches stacked by its doors, never examined by any medical board the way Lourdes cross-examines its cures. It traces the shrine back to 1658, when settler Etienne de Lessard donated land for a chapel and a crippled local man named Louis Guimont knelt at the foundation stones and stood up able to walk. Look closely at the crutches nearest the entrance, some still carrying handwritten notes tucked into the metal.
