Le Monastère des Augustines in Quebec City opens on a strange question: what do you do with a saint's skull for two centuries, when the man himself never set foot in the room? It traces the 1649 death of the Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf at the hands of Haudenosaunee warriors near Georgian Bay, and how his remains crossed the ocean to the Augustinian sisters who had themselves arrived from Dieppe just a decade earlier to found the first hospital north of Mexico. Along the way you'll meet the lay brother Frère Luc and Mother Maufils, whose painted and stitched work still lines these corridors. Look closely at the altarpiece and landscape panels as you pass through the rooms where the sisters once tended the sick.
