Sydney Town Hall

Sydney Town Hall sits atop the city's first cemetery, closed in 1820 after nearly thirty years of colonial burials. When the council needed the site in 1869, politician Robert Stewart was ordered to clear only the exact footprint of the new building, moving just over a thousand sets of remains to Rookwood and leaving hundreds more behind. The guide follows what workers kept unearthing for the next sixty years, and the two individuals, out of hundreds, who were ever identified by name.
