Spice Alley

This guide to Spice Alley on Kensington Street in Sydney traces the forgotten backyards behind some of the city's oldest surviving terrace cottages, built beside a brewery for working families and left overlooked for a century. It follows the laneway through the Central Park redevelopment and into 2015, when it was reimagined as an outdoor hawker centre modeled on Singapore's food streets. Look down as you walk it, and the original trachyte kerbstones from the old working-class lane are still underfoot.
