Middle Head

This guide to Middle Head in Sydney traces the fort colonial architect James Barnet raised in 1871 against a feared Russian invasion, and the disappearing guns installed here by the 1880s to defend the harbour. Decades later, with that invasion never having come, the army found a very different use for the tunnels beneath the gun pits.
