Chinese Garden of Friendship

This guide to the Chinese Garden of Friendship follows Henry Tsang, a Sydney councillor who in 1984 pitched giving the Chinese community a strip of harbourside land for a garden Australia had never seen. It traces how he won over Premier Neville Wran and took the idea to Guangzhou, Sydney's sister city in southern China, and how the two governments agreed in October 1985 to build it together. Landscape architects from Guangzhou designed it on garden principles reaching back roughly three thousand years, to the Shang dynasty.
