Carriageworks

This guide to Carriageworks in Sydney opens on the second of August, 1917, when a stack of timecards meant to log every workshop task down to the minute sent thousands of railway and tram workers off the job at Eveleigh. It follows the six weeks of what became known as the Great Strike, the volunteers recruited to keep trains running, and the toll the standoff took on the unions involved. The strike spread beyond Eveleigh to trams, coal and shipping across New South Wales.
