Naschmarkt

This guide to the Naschmarkt in Vienna starts with the gilded Medallion House and its ceramic twin, the Majolica House, both built over Vienna's oldest market by architect Otto Wagner around 1898 to prove that radical new art could live in an ordinary apartment block. It follows the building through the hands of the Kohn family, who took ownership in 1914, through war and forced exile from the rooms above the stalls where Viennese housewives once bought milk in ash-wood buckets.
