Leopold Museum

This guide follows Egon Schiele's 1912 portrait of Wally Neuzil, his young model and lover, one of many works in the collector Rudolf Leopold's trove now filling this museum. It traces the painting's forced transfer from its Jewish owner, dealer Lea Bondi Jaray, during the Nazi era, and her decades-long attempt to get it back from Leopold himself. The story follows the painting to a 1997 loan exhibition in New York, where a newspaper investigation set off a legal fight over who really owned it.
