In 1690, Prince Johann Adam Andreas von Liechtenstein wanted Italy's best fresco painters for his new garden palace in Vienna's Rossau district, and Italy said no. The guide follows how he turned to local painter Johann Michael Rottmayr to fill the staircases with battling giants and gods, while landing the aging Jesuit master Andrea Pozzo for the palace's showpiece: a ceiling of Hercules welcomed into Olympus, painted between 1704 and 1708.
