Retiro (Mitre Line)

This guide to Retiro station in Buenos Aires starts with the iron lattice roof overhead, forged in a Liverpool foundry and shipped across the Atlantic to be bolted into place by the Central Argentine Railway. It follows the British company's real business here — moving cattle and grain to the docks — and the land deals struck with Buenos Aires in the 1860s that let it profit before a single fare was collected. The roof itself was modeled on the great train shed at Saint Pancras in London.
