Monument to the Magna Carta and the Four Regions

This guide to the Monument to the Magna Carta and the Four Regions in Buenos Aires starts with a count: three sculptors hired to finish it, two who died before their work was done, and a shipwreck that carried part of it to the bottom of the Atlantic. It traces the project back to 1910, when the city's Spanish community set out to mark a century since the May Revolution, and follows the design through the Catalan sculptor Agustín Querol's death before a single figure left his workshop, and the successors who inherited the commission after him. In March 1916 a Spanish steamship bound for this pedestal went down off the coast of Brazil, its cargo of marble and bronze lost with it.
